Country Welcome for Indonesia

Welcome to Peace Corps Indonesia!

We are thrilled that you are considering joining us on this incredible journey of service and cultural exchange. Indonesia is a nation of remarkable diversity and resilience, with a rich history that has shaped its identity as one of the world’s largest democracies and a key player in the global economy. It is a country of vibrant cultures and traditions, and yes, its natural beauty is breathtaking—but what truly defines Indonesia is the warmth and generosity of its people.

As a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Volunteer, you will play an important role in supporting students and teachers in your assigned school and community. You will work alongside dedicated local educators to strengthen English language instruction, improve educational outcomes, and foster intercultural understanding. This experience will be challenging, rewarding, and transformative—both personally and professionally. Currently, our Volunteers serve in communities and schools across three Indonesian provinces: East Java, West Java, and East Nusa Tenggara.

Peace Corps service is demanding. It calls for flexibility, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. You will face moments of uncertainty and discomfort—but these are the very experiences that shape you. Embrace them with resilience and curiosity, and you’ll discover that every challenge brings new skills, stronger relationships, and a profound sense of purpose.

Your preparation begins with comprehensive training designed to equip you for success. You will learn Bahasa Indonesia, explore effective teaching methodologies, and develop classroom management skills. Training also includes intercultural orientation, health and safety guidance, and strategies for building strong relationships in your community. These tools will help you navigate your new environment with confidence and care.

Living with a host family is central to your experience. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Indonesian culture, understand local customs, and share your own perspectives. Through these relationships, you will become part of the community, contributing not only in the classroom but in everyday life. This cultural exchange lies at the heart of the Peace Corps mission.

Peace Corps service is more than a chapter in your life—it’s a turning point. The experiences you gain and the relationships you form will shape your perspective for years to come. Approach this journey with openness and determination, and you’ll discover that the challenges you face are the very moments that define your growth and your ability to make a meaningful difference.

On behalf of the Peace Corps Indonesia team, selamat datang—welcome! We are excited to work alongside you as you join us in supporting Indonesian communities and building meaningful connections through partnership and cultural exchange.

Terima kasih (thank you),
Country Director Brian Gleeson
