
Preparing to Depart
Peace Corps pre-departure process
After you’ve been conditionally invited to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer or a Response Volunteer, we recommend starting these pre-departure tasks immediately. The following information will help prepare you to depart for service.
Immediately after conditional invitation
You’ll receive an email introduction from your Country Desk Officer with key next steps that will need attention including, but not limited to:
- Complete your medical clearance tasks. Note that more tasks may be added, so keep an eye out for these emails.
- Initiate your legal clearance once you receive an LEG Legal Clearance Process email by submitting your background check form and fingerprint cards.
- Apply for a Peace Corps passport (no-fee U.S. passport), even if you already hold a personal passport
- Submit your visa application (if applicable)
3 months prior to departure
- Submit your aspiration statement and headshot
- Update your resume (if applicable)
- Contact your student loan lender about meeting your obligations
2 months prior to departure
Complete online onboarding tasks:
- Provide emergency contact information
- Set up your direct deposit
- Submit a student loan certification
45 days prior to departure
Complete required online training courses in our LearningSpace Portal, including:
- Core Expectations for Peace Corps Volunteers
- Safety and Security Orientation

During your first week of participation, you’ll meet virtually with Peace Corps staff working in your host country to learn about the culture and project objectives, meet your host country partner, and plan your collaborative approach.
