Application Process
Applying to serve in the Peace Corps
There are three different models of service, and the application process varies depending on how you choose to serve.
Connecting with a recruiter before you apply will help you find the best fit for your skills and interests.
Peace Corps Volunteer application process
This is the life-changing Volunteer experience you’ve heard about. Through Peace Corps service, U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old serve for 2 years while receiving a living allowance and other support.
The journey from application to departure takes about nine months.
Search openings and apply to the one that best fits your skills and interests. Make sure to note the apply by and depart by dates listed in the job position’s description.
If you aren’t set on a specific country or sector, you can apply to serve where you’re needed most, and we’ll match your skills to a position.
Fill out the online application. It takes about an hour. Pro tip: tailoring your resume to a specific opening can help position you for success.
You can have one active application at a time.
Complete the health history form so we can start to understand your individual health needs, as every Volunteer’s health and safety is a priority.
For us to support your medical needs during service, it is critically important that we have your complete and accurate health history.
Medical information is confidential and will be sent to the Office of Health Services for the medical clearance process, to make sure you have access to the necessary medical treatment and support during your service.
When you apply, we ask about your legal history. This is the place to disclose any and all legal information, including any citations, arrests, or charges — regardless of whether the charge was dismissed, sealed, or expunged.
All such incidents will show up later during your background check. If you don’t disclose at this point, you risk your invitation being rescinded based solely on non-disclosure, regardless of how minor the offense might be.
While evaluating disclosures, we consider the nature of the offense(s), how long ago the offense(s) occurred, the nature of the position in question, other relevant facts, and evidence of rehabilitation.
If you receive an interview request, you’ll participate in a virtual interview. The interview will last about an hour. Be sure to prepare answers ahead of time to the questions in the interview request email you will receive prior to your interview.
If selected, you’ll receive a conditional invitation to serve. The invitation will come by email, and you must respond within 3 days.
Note that being invited to serve is NOT the end of the application process — you must still be medically and legally cleared for service.
Provide additional medical information so our health team can certify that appropriate support will be available at your site, and additional legal information so our legal team can complete a background check.
Complete your assigned onboarding tasks and online trainings prior to your departure. Staying on top of these tasks is critical, so don’t delay.
Roughly one month before departure, you’ll receive information about your staging event. This orientation session takes place in the United States before you leave for your assignment.
Give your application an extra edge and boost your odds of being invited to serve.
