Applying to serve in the Peace Corps

There are three different models of service, and the application process varies depending on how you choose to serve.

Connecting with a recruiter before you apply will help you find the best fit for your skills and interests.

Peace Corps Response Volunteer application process

Through Peace Corps Response Volunteer opportunities, experienced professionals can serve overseas on assignments that last 6-12 months, while receiving a stipend and other support.

The journey from application to departure takes about nine months.

1 Browse open positions

Search openings and apply to the one that best fits your skills and interests. Positions are filled on a rolling basis.

2 Apply

Fill out the online application. It takes about an hour. Pro tip: tailoring your resume to a specific opportunity can help position you for success.

You can have up to three active applications at one time.

3 Health history

Complete the health history form so we can start to understand your individual health needs.

For us to support your medical needs during service, it is critically important that we have your complete and accurate health history.

Medical information is confidential and will be sent to the Office of Health Services for the medical clearance process to make sure you have access to the necessary medical treatment and support needed during your service.

4 Legal history

When you apply, we ask about your legal history. This is the place to disclose any and all information including any citations, arrests or charges — regardless of whether the charge was dismissed, sealed, or expunged.

All such incidents will show up later during your background check. If you don’t disclose at this point, you risk your invitation being rescinded based solely on non-disclosure, regardless of how minor the offense might be.

While evaluating disclosures, we consider the nature of the offense(s), how long ago the offense(s) occurred, the nature of the position in question, other relevant facts, and evidence of rehabilitation.

5 Interview

If you receive an interview request, you’ll participate in a virtual interview. The interview will last about an hour. Be sure to prepare answers ahead of time to the questions in the interview request email.

6 Invitation

If selected, you’ll receive a conditional invitation to serve. The invitation will come by email, and you must respond within 2 days. Note that being invited to serve is NOT the end of the application process — you must still be medically and legally cleared for service.

7 Medical and legal clearances

Provide additional medical information so our health team can certify that appropriate support will be available at your site; and additional legal information so our legal team can complete a background check.

8 Onboarding

Complete required documentation two months prior to departure.

9 Depart

Embark on a life-defining and impactful service journey. You’ll depart directly from your home of record to your new host country. You’ll receive a one- to two-week orientation on safety and security, health, and culture, and basic language resources.
