Description and qualifications

About the project

Educators with experience and a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are needed in Cameroon.

Cameroon has staked its vision for economic growth and technological advancement on STEM instruction. To meet this vision, the country is transitioning from a teacher-centered system to a more interactive student-centered, competency-based system. This transition from a teacher-centered education system to a student-centered system brings its own challenges. While teachers are struggling with creating competency-based learning experiences, students are still adjusting to the new, more interactive system.

As a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Specialist, you will collaborate with staff at secondary schools. Together, you will identify opportunities to strengthen the capacities of teachers and students, especially young girls who may abandon STEM studies due to societal stereotypes or fall behind due to more responsibilities at home.

"Agriculture is a big part of life in my village, and getting involved in it has been incredibly rewarding. No matter how much effort I put into lesson plans or projects, being out there working alongside the community speaks volumes."

Training

After a 2-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to a semi-rural or peri-urban community where you will collaborate with secondary school staff. You will work to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Cameroon will equip you with French language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.

Couples information

Only heterosexual couples can be accepted for this program. Each person must apply separately and must qualify for a position in either the same or a different sector than their partner. Cross-sector couples will live with different host families who may reside in different communities during training. Cross-sector couples may see each other for joint-sector training days or on the weekends but neither are guaranteed. Cohabitating couples are highly encouraged to present themselves as married throughout service due to cultural expectations.
