“Attending Moroccan weddings, celebrating holidays like Ramadan and Eid, and joining in festivities for Morocco's success in the World Cup have allowed me to connect with the local culture on a deep level.”
1. What got you interested in the Peace Corps?
I've always had a serving heart, finding joy in volunteering from a young age. My passion for making a positive impact on communities deepened during high school when I was introduced to the Peace Corps. The idea of being part of an organization dedicated to service and cultural exchange resonated with me instantly. My volunteer experiences, whether in local communities or through organized programs, have strengthened my commitment to contributing to the well-being of others. With a background in global health and development, I believed I had the qualities and capabilities to thrive in the Peace Corps and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I would be fortunate to serve. I completed the Peace Corps Prep program at my college, and here I am today.
2. What projects are you working on?
In the community, we are currently spearheading a project to establish a women's fitness center, complemented by health education classes. The initiative aims to promote women's well-being by offering fitness opportunities and essential health knowledge in a private setting. I'm excited about the positive impact this project can have on the community's overall health and empowerment! I also teach English and life skills classes every day. We have a walking/hiking club; an advanced English club where we hold events like Open Mic Night, Trivia Night, Karaoke Night, and other English games; a volunteer club that holds clean-ups in the community; an Intellectual Club where one person presents a topic each week; and we are soon starting GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) and BRO (Boys Respecting Others) clubs.
3. What strategies have you used to integrate into your community?
Attending Moroccan weddings, celebrating holidays like Ramadan and Eid, and joining in festivities for Morocco's success in the World Cup have allowed me to connect with the local culture on a deep level. Actively participating in my community's youth and women's center has provided me with opportunities to contribute meaningfully. Additionally, sharing moments like Friday couscous with friends has been a delightful way to build personal connections. Through these experiences, I aim to bridge cultural gaps and foster a sense of belonging within the community.
4. What is a highlight of your time in service so far?
One of the most memorable highlights of my time in service has been witnessing the incredible energy and love Moroccans have for their country during the World Cup. The camaraderie and unity displayed during and after each match was truly inspiring. Whether celebrating in the streets, cafes, or any available space, the shared joy and pride created a powerful sense of community. This experience has deeply shaped my service, emphasizing the importance of shared moments and cultural connections in fostering positive relationships within the community.
5. What have you enjoyed most about the community where you are serving?
What I've enjoyed most about the community where I am serving is the close-knit and welcoming atmosphere. Living in a small community has been incredibly rewarding—we're always together, enjoying each other's company, and there's never a dull moment. The strong sense of connection and the special family ties are aspects of the culture that I deeply admire. We learn from one another, take care of each other, and these shared experiences have created a deep bond that makes my service truly fulfilling.
6. What are some of the most important things you’ve learned from your community?
One of the most significant lessons has been the art of finding happiness in simple living. The emphasis on contentment with life's essentials has been a transformative experience. I've come to appreciate the paramount importance of family bonds, having witnessed the deep connections and support within the community. In m y time here I’ve also learned to prepare delicious Moroccan dishes like couscous, tagine, and shebakiya. These learnings have enriched my service, providing me with a deeper understanding of the community's values and way of life.
7. How do you spend time when you are not working on a project?
When I'm not working on projects, I embrace the vibrant community life. Whether exploring the souk (market) with friends, hiking to catch the sunset from a small mountain, or simply hanging out at the youth center, there's always something fun to do. I find joy in riding my bike around my site, appreciating the local scenery. Plus, spending quality time with my two cats adds a touch of comfort to my downtime. These activities contribute to my well-being and deepen my connection to the community.
8. What are you looking forward to in your remaining time as a Volunteer?
I am eagerly looking forward to completing and ensuring the sustainability of the projects I've been working on in the community. These upcoming months are my “push it” months, where I am committed to giving my all to make a lasting impact. The prospect of seeing the continued success of these initiatives is a major source of excitement.
9. Once you finish your service, what will you do differently when you return to the U.S.?
I anticipate that the insights and skills gained during this transformative experience will influence my approach to life upon returning to the U.S. I've developed a deep appreciation for community engagement and cultural understanding, and I plan to integrate these values into my daily life. Whether it's fostering stronger community connections, continuing to engage in volunteer work, or incorporating the lessons learned abroad into my personal and professional endeavors, I aim to carry forward the positive impact of my Peace Corps service into the next chapter of my life.
