Description and qualifications

About the project

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) – Curriculum Unit in Belize has requested the support of Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) to serve as Early Childhood Education Curriculum Specialists in various District Education Centres (DEC) and substations. MoECST has forged a partnership with the Peace Corps Belize Response Program to design and implement an early childhood project for pre-schools. Belize’s National Preschool Curriculum Framework outlines a vision for preschools which are play-based, child-centered, and allow children to make choices throughout the day and interact with nature. Key stakeholders have identified a gap in this vision and the resources and practices being implemented. While the Curriculum Framework describes the benefits and ideas of a play-based classroom environment, these ideas are not transferred into the monthly curriculum guides. Furthermore, teachers and principals are seeking to better understand play-based learning.

The PCRVs will provide teacher capacity strengthening on play-based learning and best practices in early childhood education and share best practices for positive interactions with preschool-aged children to promote critical thinking, language, and social development. The PCRVs will also support integration of contextualized academic skill building, including environmental print, leveraging children’s names and interests in letter learning, and creating opportunities for literacy and numeracy through play.
