Welcome to Peace Corps Sri Lanka

Greetings from the beautiful nation of Sri Lanka!

We’re excited to share a glimpse of Sri Lanka—a country with a rich history, vibrant culture, and a future full of promise. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, you’ll live among warm, welcoming communities eager to collaborate, learn, and grow alongside you. Our dedicated Peace Corps Sri Lanka team will support you every step of the way.

Peace Corps first opened in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1962 and continued through 1998. After a 20-year hiatus, the Government of Sri Lanka invited Peace Corps back to strengthen English language education nationwide. Today, Volunteers work as English teachers in government schools, partnering with local educators in rural and underserved communities. Through co-teaching and collaboration, you’ll help students build confidence in speaking English and introduce engaging, student-centered learning. Your counterparts will gain new techniques and renewed confidence—creating classrooms full of discovery and growth.

This work is challenging, rewarding, and transformative. You’ll begin with 11 weeks of pre-service training, living with a host family while learning Sinhala or Tamil, while learning cultural norms and essential technical skills. After swearing in, you’ll spend two years at your permanent site, continuing to live with a host family. Each day will bring new experiences—from routine lessons to unforgettable moments, deep conversations, and lifelong friendships.

Being part of one of the early groups to serve in Sri Lanka ensures that your insights and experiences will help build a strong foundation for future Volunteers. If you’re passionate about service, curious about culture, and excited to teach, we can’t wait to welcome you to Peace Corps Sri Lanka!

With peace and friendship,
