Why should I choose the Peace Corps rather than another international volunteer opportunity?

In a world filled with international volunteer programs ranging in length from days to years, it can be hard to know which option is the right one for you.

Among the numerous short-term service trips, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private volunteer organizations, the Peace Corps stands out from the rest.

Here are the key reasons why thousands of Americans choose the Peace Corps as their pathway to volunteering abroad, cultural immersion, and professional growth.

1. A legacy of trust and impact

For 65 years and counting, the Peace Corps has been partnering with communities around the world to create meaningful, lasting change. Few international volunteer organizations have a history this long—or a reputation this strong.

This legacy matters for a few reasons:

  • Host countries know and trust the Peace Corps.
  • Programs have been refined over decades.
  • Volunteers benefit from well-established systems, safety standards, and support structures.
  • Communities have long-term relationships with Peace Corps staff.

Choosing the Peace Corps means joining a mission that has stood the test of time—and one that people around the world recognize and value.

2. Deep, sustained community partnerships

Many volunteer programs focus on short-term service: building a well, teaching a workshop, or providing temporary support. While well-intentioned, these approaches often do not focus on the long-term impact.

The Peace Corps takes a different approach. Volunteers live and work in a community for an extended period—up to 12 months for Response and two years for traditional Volunteers—during which they build the kind of trust with community members that is only possible with time. Volunteers collaborate on projects identified by the community itself. It’s not about imposing solutions; it’s about learning, adapting, and supporting local goals. The impact lasts because the community drives the work.

3. Comprehensive training that sets you up for success

Before service begins, Volunteers complete intensive training in local language, cultural understanding, technical skills related to their programmatic sector, as well as country-specific health and safety.

This level of preparation is rare among international volunteer organizations and is a major factor in setting up Peace Corps Volunteers for success.

4. No program fees—plus financial, medical, and professional support

Unlike many international programs that require participants to pay for the experience, the Peace Corps provides a service opportunity at no cost. The application is free and applicants will be reimbursed for necessary medical evaluation expenses incurred during the medical clearance process.

Volunteers receive a monthly living allowance to cover their day-to-day expenses in country, are provided housing, get comprehensive medical and dental care, and are flown to and from the country of service. Get more details on the Volunteer benefits.

Upon returning to the U.S., Volunteers will receive a service award* of $10,800 (pre-tax) as well as federal hiring benefits, including non-competitive eligibility. Learn more about the benefits after service.

4. A strong, supportive framework for health, safety, and well-being

The Peace Corps is an agency of the U.S. government. As such, Volunteers can expect strong support that is simply not possible from other organizations or NGOs.

From dedicated, in-country staff to safety protocols that have been refined over six decades, Volunteers receive regular check-ins from program managers who genuinely care, emergency assistance, culturally informed guidance, and mental and emotional support. Not to mention expert help with visas and passports. This is often uncommon among private or short-term volunteer programs.

5. Career-building experience valued by employers

Peace Corps service is widely recognized as a powerful professional endeavor. It’s a life-changing experience that equips Volunteers with leadership and project management skills, intercultural communication abilities, language proficiency, problem-solving skills, and of course, adaptability and resilience.

Plus, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) join a nationwide network of close to 250,000 alumni.

6. Genuine cultural immersion—not a vacation

Peace Corps Volunteers become part of the community they serve. They build relationships, participate in daily life, learn a language (or two, or three!) and gain an understanding of culture that simply isn't possible through short-term programs.

Many say this cultural exchange becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their service—and stays with them forever.

“I have kept in close touch with my host family and some students and friends in Namibia and have been able to travel back there twice since I left. Namibia is absolutely a second home for me and I’m so lucky to have those connections in my life.” KJ, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, Namibia

So… why choose the Peace Corps?

Because it offers depth, trust, and long-term impact that few other programs can match. Because it invests in you—with training, support, benefits during and after service, and professional growth. Because it is built on decades of partnership and a mission bigger than any one person.

If you’re seeking an international volunteer experience rooted in equity, cultural understanding, and authentic collaboration, the Peace Corps stands in a league of its own.
