Joanne P.
“It’s been a privilege to work with a team that has added to my level of confidence. I know that I will continue the journey of being a more seasoned and global educator to enrich lives wherever I go.”
1. What got you interested in Peace Corps Response?
I have spent all of my teaching years in the area of special education, which made me comfortable sharing my knowledge and experience anywhere. After reading the Peace Corps Response job description and what was expected of me, I felt very comfortable in serving in that capacity. In addition, to ease any fear that I may have had, the Response position was shorter than the traditional volunteer positions, just in case I had any difficulties adjusting.
2. What projects are you working on with your community?
Currently, I work with the Ministry of Education - Special Education Needs Unit, which oversees all special education programs in the country. As the curriculum designer I am in the process of designing a vocational pathway curriculum for the three special education schools. These serve students with significant disabilities who are on an academic path.
I am also involved in managing and piloting a digital online assessment tool to help identify learning difficulties in some students. Once these are identified students can receive direct and explicit guidance to meet their needs. I provide training to the teachers and assist them in navigating the platform since they have never utilized this program before.
In addition, I make presentations at professional development trainings as well as assist in creating literacy frameworks for schools in need.
3. How have you leveraged your previous professional experience and skills in your service?
My previous experience has provided me with everything that I need for this position. The structured system that I worked in over the years and training that I received have proven to be instrumental in every aspect. For instance, I am able to write individual learning plans for those who need it. Other examples include observing students then providing teachers with strategies that may be helpful. Also, sharing skills and best practices with teachers to make teaching easier.
4. What is a highlight of your time in service so far?
One highlight of my time in service is being involved in the decision-making process for programs that are being planned. My counterparts have included me to use my experience and skills to help with much-needed changes to the special education program. The Ministry of Education is in the process of improving the special education system so that both students and teachers can benefit.
5. What strategies have you used to meet the challenges of a Response Volunteer experience?
Being a Response Volunteer comes with challenges that need to be navigated carefully in order to be comfortable during this mission. It is imperative to understand the culture and the way in which the locals operate and function. This helps make the job easier and avoids unrealistic expectations. For example, I understand that it’s important to be flexible around time and understand that an event may not begin at the time stated.
Another issue is transportation, which may not be reliable. It is important to establish reputable, safe and dependable connections to move about.
6. How will the skills you are developing help you in the future?
As a Response Volunteer I am here to share my skills and experience, but I have also learned a lot. I know that my level of experience has increased significantly. It’s been a privilege to work with a team that has added to my level of confidence. I know that I will continue the journey of being a more seasoned and global educator to enrich lives wherever I go.
