Description and qualifications

About the project

Moldovan teachers and students know that learning a foreign language can open doors of opportunity. You are encouraged to share your skills as a native English speaker with these motivated learners!
As Moldova’s economy continues to grow and diversify, there is a critical need for youth to develop foreign language skills with the support of native speakers. Such proficiency especially in English enables youth to obtain competitive jobs and make international connections that will advance both their own and their country’s prospects on the global stage. To meet the Ministry of Education’s goal of a population trained and confident in English language skills, Moldova is committed to providing high-quality English instruction to students at the primary, middle, and secondary school levels across the country. While the motivation is there to provide such support to students, schools lack sufficient educators with the necessary capacity in language and in teaching methods to advance student proficiency in English.
As an English Teacher, you will collaborate with local educators to deliver the national English language curriculum in a way that encourages retention. Through engaging clubs and camp activities, you and your colleagues will encourage students to practice English, building their confidence in using the language. You will also support professional development opportunities for teachers, introducing new methods of instruction and fostering knowledge exchanges.

Volunteers live with host families during training and at the beginning of their service. While some may have the option to transition to independent housing after eight months if it is available and approved, most will continue to live with host families for the duration of their service. Volunteers serve across Moldova in both urban and rural settings.

Training

As an English Teacher, you will be trained on Moldova’s English language curriculum, classroom management approaches, and lesson planning. Peace Corps/Moldova will teach you Romanian to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. A small number of Volunteers may learn Russian instead, depending on the needs of their assigned community. Volunteers trained in one of these languages will also receive language resources and learn basics of the second language. After 9 weeks of training, you will move to a rural or urban community where you will collaborate with a local school. You will work with the community to assess the local needs and develop solutions based on English language proficiency.

Couples information

Only heterosexual couples can be accepted for this program. Each person must apply separately and qualify for a position in a different sector than their partner. Cross-sector couples will live with different host families who may reside in different communities during training. Cross-sector couples may see each other for joint-sector training days or on the weekends but neither are guaranteed. Cohabitating couples are highly encouraged to present themselves as married throughout service due to cultural expectations.
