Projects in Samoa
Education
Peace Corps Samoa’s Education program promotes English literacy in Samoan primary schools. The Primary School English Literacy Project was developed in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, and Culture and was officially launched in fall 2012. Volunteers in the Primary School English Literacy Project play an important role in helping Samoans develop the skills they need to succeed and thrive. Volunteers not only build the English literacy skills of students but they also help teachers incorporate student-centered teaching methods, conduct professional development opportunities, improve digital literacy, develop welcoming and resource-filled libraries for students and communities, and promote a love of reading and learning for their students, teachers and communities.
Environment
Ridge-to-Reef Resilient Samoa was launched in 2025 in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Women, Community, and Social Development. Peace Corps Volunteers provide project management support to plan, implement, and monitor local environmental priorities related to the sustainable management of coastal and marine ecosystems, forest and watershed habitats, and solid waste. For sustainability, they focus on strengthening capacity through project design and management for community groups and education and awareness efforts for individuals, including women, adolescents, and children. Volunteers prioritize increasing knowledge, skills and attitudes on a range of environmental topics related to the broader ridge-to-reef landscape unique to Samoa.
