In 2026, during Peace Corps 65th anniversary, Peace Corps Mexico celebrates 22 years of service and development work with Mexico. Our Volunteers serve proudly, supporting English teachers in universities. They work with local counterparts in schools and communities to develop unique strategies to increase environmental awareness among future leaders. Peace Corps Response Volunteers work with local counterparts with specializations ranging from English teaching to small business enterprise, natural resource management, and youth development.

We have discovered new ways of learning and sharing with each other. Virtual service sharing and learning has become another way in which individuals who are not able to make a long-term in-person commitment can now serve Mexico through online virtual methods and strategies adapted to an ever-changing world.

Our program in Mexico is guided on sound development principles by a dedicated local staff who trains and supports Volunteers to adapt their skills to the culturally diverse communities of Mexico. Peace Corps Mexico staff also foster strong relationships with development partners, assuring that our work is coordinated with and supports the development goals and national priorities of Mexico. We are grateful for the sustained relationships with and the support we receive from host country agencies such as the Agencia Mexicana de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AMEXCID), the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), and the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP).

One of my predecessors described the relationship between Mexico and the United States as much more than neighbors. This is true. We have developed uniquely, side by side, for a very long time while sharing many aspects of our cultures and learning from each other. The mission of the Peace Corps, world peace and friendship, is embodied in the work of Peace Corps Volunteers who come to Mexico to share and to learn. The success of our program to meet our mission is tied to the close relationships between Volunteers and the friends they make in Mexico by living and serving in local communities and institutions. Peace Corps Volunteers and our community hosts in Mexico are uniquely positioned to draw on the best of our unique relationship and our shared history, cultures, and values to pave the way for stronger ties and understanding between our nations. This opportunity allows us to truly get to know one another and develop friendships on a deep and sustainable level regardless of the ongoing challenges of modern times. Volunteers are dedicated to building those relationships by living and integrating into the communities we serve. It goes without saying that Volunteers return home enriched by what they have learned from the people of Mexico, allowing them to become a bridge between cultures that will last for the rest of their lives.

Together, we can create a better future for everyone, one relationship at a time.
