Country Welcome for Madagascar

Tonga Soa!

Peace Corps Madagascar Country Director
Country Director, Peace Corps Madagascar

Thank you for visiting Peace Corps Madagascar’s website. We invite you to click around and learn more about what it means to serve alongside Malagasy communities around this diverse and beautiful country. You’ll find stories and anecdotes from former Volunteers, tips on packing and preparing, and begin to discover what makes the experience of Volunteering in Madagascar so meaningful.

Madagascar is biologically and culturally rich, diverse and incredibly unique. Nicknamed "the Red Island" due to its red laterite soil, Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and is home to 30 million people and 18 ethnic groups. Over 10,000 species of plants and 90% of the animal species—including lemurs and baobab trees—are endemic to Madagascar, found nowhere else on earth.

While there is significant development and progress occurring all the time, the realities of poverty are widespread. Madagascar remains one of the poorest countries in the world today. Deforestation and the impact of extreme weather events, such as cyclones, compound the challenges of development as crops grow threatened and infrastructure is weakened or destroyed.

Our Volunteers participate with Malagasy people and work in partnership to achieve shared development goals. Our work addresses some of the critical needs faced by rural communities. Peace Corps Volunteer opportunities include 2-year service assignments in Health, Agriculture, and Education; 1-year Response assignments in Education; and Virtual assignments in teaching English.

As the country director, I have the honor to work alongside a team of experts in all things Peace Corps, community development, intercultural communication, medical care, and safety and security. Together we work to support the experiences and success of each Volunteer and community. We take seriously the mission and goals of Peace Corps and believe in the power of community and cross-cultural service to others.

As you review this website, we invite you not just to read, but to really engage. Form your questions, imagine yourself in one of our service opportunities, and when you’re ready … join us!

Tongasoa!
