Country Welcome for Liberia
Welcome to Peace Corps Liberia. As country director, I am honored to welcome you to a program rooted in service, partnership, and a shared commitment to sustainable development.
Peace Corps/Liberia welcomed its first Volunteers in 1962. Since then, more than 4,000 Volunteers have worked alongside Liberian communities to advance locally defined priorities, with a strong focus on education and health, and broader support to community development efforts.
Volunteers serve in schools, universities, health facilities, and community-based organizations across the country. In close partnership with Liberian counterparts, Volunteers strengthen STEM and literacy learning outcomes, support health initiatives, and collaborate with local leaders to address urgent community needs. Just as importantly, Volunteers and Liberians build relationships that deepen mutual understanding and reflect the Peace Corps mission of promoting world peace and friendship.
Liberia is known for warmth, resilience, and hospitality. Volunteers are genuinely welcomed with care and accountability, and are expected to engage with humility, professionalism, and cultural respect. Service here is authentic and immersive. It is a true Peace Corps experience built on adaptability, follow-through, and being present with your community. It is a meaningful, relationship-driven service that will challenge you, strengthen you, and stay with you.
If you are considering Peace Corps, I encourage you to come to Liberia. You will find committed counterparts, communities ready to partner, and a country that will welcome you with generosity and pride.
Sincerely,
Country Director Vernice Guthrie
