Country Welcome for Liberia

Stephanie Joseph de Goes, Acting Country Director
Acting Country Director Stephanie Joseph de Goes

Welcome to Peace Corps/Liberia. I am honored to invite you into a program rooted in purpose, partnership, and a shared commitment to service, the kind of grassroots, people-to-people work that builds lasting goodwill and sustainable change from the ground up.

Peace Corps has been partnering with the people and Government of Liberia since 1962. In the more than six decades since, over 4,000 Volunteers have worked alongside Liberian communities to advance locally defined priorities, with a strong focus on education and health. That history matters; it reflects something real: the trust that forms when people show up, stay, and do the work together.

Volunteers in Liberia serve in schools, universities, health facilities, and community-based organizations across the country. Alongside Liberian counterparts, they strengthen STEM and literacy learning outcomes, support critical health initiatives, and collaborate with local leaders to address community-identified needs. But perhaps more importantly, they build relationships, the kind that deepen mutual understanding, bridge cultures, and embody the Peace Corps’ mission of promoting world peace and friendship in its most human form.

Liberia is a country of extraordinary warmth, resilience, and hospitality. Volunteers are welcomed with genuine care, and they are expected to meet that welcome with humility, cultural respect, and accountability. Service here is immersive and authentic, grounded in real community. It will not always be easy. But it will be meaningful, and it will stay with you.

If you’re considering this path, know that you will not simply bring your skills to Liberia, you will grow here. You will learn to be comfortable with discomfort, to listen before you lead, and to find strength in community. You will leave with capabilities in intercultural communication, collaboration, and adaptive problem-solving that no classroom can replicate. And through the Coverdell Fellows program and our global network of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, the opportunities that begin here can continue to shape your path long after your service ends.

On a personal note: Peace Corps service changed the trajectory of my own life. It introduced me to a way of working rooted in mutual respect, community trust, and a belief that sustainable change happens when people work together, not for each other, but with each other. That conviction drives everything we do at Peace Corps/Liberia.

Our team, dedicated American and Liberian staff alike, is here to train you, support you, and champion your growth every step of the way. We are committed to your success, and to the success of the communities you will be privileged to serve.

If you are ready to focus on “we” rather than “I” to do something harder than you’ve done before, and more rewarding than you might expect, I invite you to join us. Together, we can advance peace and friendship, one community, one conversation, one relationship at a time.

Warmly,

Peace Corps/Liberia
