Country Welcome for Guyana
Welcome to Peace Corps Guyana!
Greetings from the Cooperative Republic of Guyana—proudly known as the "land of many waters." My name is Christie Scott, and I have the privilege of serving as the country director for Peace Corps/Guyana. It is an honor to lead a program that has been part of Guyana’s development journey for decades, fostering collaboration and creating sustainable impact.
Since 1961, the Peace Corps has worked to promote world peace and friendship by partnering with communities around the globe. In Guyana, we collaborate closely with the government to ensure our efforts align with national priorities. More than 1,400 Volunteers have served in Guyana since 1966—supporting programs in community health, early grade literacy, and environmental education—with brief pauses from 1971-1995 and during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022).
Today, Volunteers live and serve in nine of Guyana’s ten regions—from coastal towns to riverine communities and indigenous villages in the hinterland. They work alongside local educators in schools, sharing knowledge and strengthening capacity. Since reopening in late 2022, we have welcomed four cohorts of two-year Volunteers, 10 Response Volunteers, and 18 Virtual Service Participants.
Guyana is a country of incredible beauty and diversity. From winding rivers and coastal tidal pools to lush forests and vast savannas, its landscapes are breathtaking. The hinterland is home to indigenous communities, pristine forests, and spectacular waterfalls, while the coast hosts vibrant towns and most of the population.
Guyana is also experiencing rapid economic growth following the discovery of offshore oil reserves. This transformation brings new opportunities and challenges—from job creation and rising costs to environmental considerations. At the same time, ecotourism is expanding, promoting sustainable use of Guyana’s unique natural resources.
Before being sworn-in as Volunteers, Trainees complete a 10-week pre-service training while living with host families. This immersive experience in a community along the Demerara River, about 40 minutes outside of Georgetown, prepares Volunteers for a safe, healthy, and meaningful service. Our dedicated staff provide technical training, policy guidance, and support during pre-service training and throughout the Volunteer's service journey.
If you are seeking an opportunity to grow personally and professionally while making a lasting impact, consider joining Peace Corps/Guyana. This beautiful, ethnically diverse country warmly welcomes Volunteers who are eager to learn, share, and serve. Here, you will find opportunities to make a meaningful difference while discovering the richness of Guyana’s culture and natural beauty.
Every step you take toward service creates ripples of change that last far beyond your time in Guyana. Be bold, be curious, and let your commitment to making a difference guide you. The world needs your passion!
