Country Welcome for Ghana
Akwaaba — welcome!
Ghana is a country rich in culture, history, and hospitality. From its peaceful, rural communities to its coastline, forested hills, and savannah, Ghana offers nothing but a breathtaking backdrop for service. Most of all, it is the warmth, resilience, and generosity of the Ghanaian people that define the experience.
Since Peace Corps’ beginning in 1961, more than 5,000 Volunteers have seamlessly partnered with communities across the country—building lasting relationships rooted in mutual learning and shared progress. Peace Corps’ first Volunteer swore into service in Ghana, and as an incoming Volunteer, you now add your own chapter to this rich tapestry of service, friendship, and collaboration.
Ghana’s leaders have long embraced this revered partnership. From President Nkrumah pictured with Peace Corps’ "Pioneering 52" to President Mahama’s respect for Volunteers who shaped his education and career, Peace Corps Volunteers have been warmly welcomed as valued partners in development. This enduring bilateral relationship reflects a shared commitment to cultural understanding, people-to-people connections, and the belief that living and working together strengthens both nations.
Today, Volunteers serve in three sectors:
- Education, including support for literacy, STEM, and deaf education
- Agriculture and Food Security, strengthening livelihoods and nutrition through smallholder farming and community-based solutions
- Health, promoting maternal and child well-being through prevention, education, and local capacity building
Across all sectors, Volunteers work side-by-side with teachers, farmers, health workers, youth, and community leaders to address locally identified priorities. Not only are fellow Peace Corps Volunteers and staff respected to help address community concerns, Peace Corps/Ghana embraces relationships with like-minded partners, including CorpsAfrica, the United Nations, KOICA, JICA, and French Volunteers.
Whether supporting classrooms, improving nutrition, empowering youth and girls, or collaborating on community projects, your service is grounded in partnership. You will live and work alongside Ghanaians, learning as much as you teach, and contributing to solutions built on local strengths.
Volunteers play an important role in strengthening intercultural understanding—advancing Peace Corps’ core mission of world peace and friendship through everyday relationships. As part of your journey, you will learn local languages—including Twi, Ewe, Dagbani, and Ghanaian Sign Language—deepening your connection to your host community and strengthening your ability to listen, collaborate, and serve with cultural humility.
Another reason why Peace Corps/Ghana is special is because of its staff: the country has a team of dedicated Ghanaian and American professionals who provide training, medical and security support, and ongoing guidance throughout your service. From pre-service training to community integration, language learning, and technical development, we are committed to helping you thrive.
If you are considering Peace Corps service, we invite you to explore more about Ghana and our programs. And if you’ve already made the decision, we are delighted to welcome you into a proud tradition of collaboration, learning, and shared purpose.
Again, akwaaba to Ghana! May your service be filled with growth, connection, and the deep rewards of working together.
