When should I submit my application?

When applying to be a Peace Corps Volunteer it’s important to know when to submit your application and when you should expect to hear back.

First, the Peace Corps has a choice-based model by which applicants can choose which program they'd like to apply to (but flexibility continues to be of utmost importance, and it's always possible to apply to serve where you're needed most).

Once you decide to apply, review the Volunteer openings carefully. Review the required skills, desired skills, and language requirements before filling out an application.

When should I submit my application?

Each two-year Volunteer opening includes three key dates: Apply By, Know By, and Depart On. It's important to pay close attention to the dates listed and to only apply once you're ready. These dates are firmly set, with only very rare exceptions. Invitees arrive in their country of service as a group, and the set departure date can't be altered per individual. You're all in this together.

Here is an approximate calendar of when new jobs go live on our site:

  • In February, programs that depart January through March of the following year are posted
  • In May, programs that depart April through June of the following year are posted
  • In August, programs that depart July through September of the following year are posted
  • In November, programs that depart October through December of the following year are posted

For example, if you anticipate graduating from college in May 2026, and you would like to depart for service in September 2026, you should begin your application in August 2025.

On average, once a Volunteer opening is posted, applications are accepted over a period of six months following the posting date. Candidates are invited on a rolling basis. The earlier you submit an application, the more likely you are to be considered for the program you applied to. If you wait to submit an application until the Apply By date, the program you have applied for may be filled. Submit your application as soon as possible; don’t wait until the Apply By date!

When will I hear back?

It may be several weeks or months until you are notified of a decision on your application. The last possible date you will be notified of a decision is the Know By date.

We encourage you to use this time to continue doing research about Peace Corps service and remain informed and professional. There are various tools available to aid this process, from connecting with a recruiter and attending events, to visiting the website and following Peace Corps' social media platforms.
