About Cameroon

Cameroon is often called “Africa in miniature” because of its incredible variety of landscapes and cultures. From coastal beaches and dense rainforests to volcanic mountains and savannah plains, the country offers a rich and complex environment. More than 200 ethnic groups and over 250 languages make Cameroon one of the most culturally rich nations in Africa. This diversity reflects a long history that includes ancient kingdoms such as the Bamum and Tikar, a colonial past under Germany, France, and Britain, and independence in 1960 followed by reunification in 1961. Today, Cameroon is bilingual, with French and English as its two official languages.

A rich tradition: 63 years of Peace Corps service

The Peace Corps has been present in Cameroon since 1962. Over the past 63 years, nearly 4,000 Volunteers have served in all 10 regions of the country. Volunteers work primarily in rural communities, partnering with local leaders on projects in three key sectors: Agriculture, Community Health, and Education. These efforts are rooted in collaboration and humility, supporting communities achieve sustainable development while building valuable skills such as adaptability, leadership, and intercultural communication.

The realities of service in Cameroon

Cameroon is a beautiful and welcoming country, but life here comes with challenges. About 37 percent of Cameroonians live below the poverty line, and rural areas often lack reliable electricity, clean water, and paved roads. Health systems are strained by malaria, HIV, and limited access to care—though recent initiatives, such as malaria vaccine rollouts, show progress. Education is free at the primary level, yet disparities persist, especially in rural regions. Agriculture remains labor-intensive, providing low yields and limited income generation. Volunteers should expect resource constraints and embrace resilience and creativity.

Despite these challenges, service in Cameroon is deeply rewarding. Volunteers immerse themselves in local culture, learn French (and possibly Fulfulde or other local languages), celebrate traditions, and build lasting relationships. They contribute to meaningful projects, from improving farming techniques to promoting health awareness and strengthening education. Along the way, Volunteers gain skills that open doors in any career, including problem-solving, intercultural competence, and leadership in real-world conditions. For those seeking challenge and reward, Cameroon is an ideal choice.

Safety and security are important considerations. Several regions and tourist destinations—including the North, Far North, and Limbe—are restricted for Volunteer travel due to security concerns. Even in areas such as the capital, Yaoundé, Volunteers must remain highly vigilant. Before traveling to neighboring countries, additional safety and security plans are required. While Volunteers are ultimately responsible for their own safety and well-being, Peace Corps/Cameroon provides strong support through its safety and security manager, Peter, who works closely with staff and Volunteers to deliver proactive, timely assistance, immediate incident response, and personalized travel planning.

Language learning is another ongoing part of the Peace Corps/Cameroon experience. While Volunteers receive training in French and/or Fulfulde during Pre-Service Training, learning local languages can further enhance communication and community connection at site. Peace Corps/Cameroon supports this effort through our language and culture facilitators, individualized study plans, and tutoring support throughout service.
