The main focus of the program, of course, is the technical training of Peace Corps Volunteers and their Counterparts, to be able to design, build, use and maintain improved food dryers and stores.
The purpose of this manual is to demonstrate how small farmers and garden producers in Jamaica can increase their production. This will increase their income and will help Jamaica achieve the goal of self-reliance in food.
While a particular project may focus on only one or two of these sector competencies, the life skills and leadership topics relate to all aspects of life, including: succeeding in the workplace, fostering healthy living, and engaging with communities. With this manual, Volunteers leading a wide range of positive youth development activities in any sector can learn to integrate life and leadership skills training into their relationships with youth in their communities.
This manual contains recommendations and best practices for Volunteers as they work alongside community members to develop and improve processes in response to community-identified waste management needs. This manual is designed to provide development workers with the information and tools needed either to begin or to improve poultry production. For those who are inexperienced in poultry production, this manual can identify and provide the basic information needed to raise and market poultry successfully.
During 2013-2014, Peace Corps/Senegal and Peace Corps/Washington collaborated on a process evaluation of Peace Corps/Senegal’s Master Farmer (MF) Program. The goal of the evaluation was to determine if the program was reaching its intended objectives to provide MFs with appropriate resources to develop “Master Farms”; support MFs to conduct relevant training; and promote adoption of improved agricultural technologies and management practices by local farmers. The evaluation identified best practices, lessons learned, and overall recommendations for improving the program.
This training provides Volunteers with a process that helps people help themselves. This simple process is effective when applied to an activity, such as a training or counseling session; or a project, such as organizing community gardens, building latrines or water systems, or increasing immunization coverage.
The Savings and Loan Association Guide is meant to assist Peace Corps Volunteers and community work partners who want to help their communities to start community-managed savings and loan associations. The Reference Guide provides an overview to methodology, as well as complete session plans, detailed meeting and recordkeeping procedures, and monitoring tools.
