Utilizing rabbit, as an alternative protein source and its by-products as an income-generating activity, has been the campaign of dedicated rabbit raisers for many years. We have seen many backyard, commercial, and nutrition education rabbit production projects succeed and fail, although successes have so far surpassed the failures. From observation and evaluation of these past and ongoing ventures, the following criteria are offered as guidelines to insure success in your project.
Peace Corps Volunteers and others who conduct environmental education activities in schools, environmental education centers, parks, and communities are faced with a dilemma. On one hand, environmental issues need to be addressed through education, but locally developed materials either do not exist or are of low quality. On the other hand, environmental educators often have a variety of materials available to them but were they developed in other countries or regions.
For Peace Corps, development centers on building local capacity and self-reliance among those who need it most. Accordingly, Peace Crops promotes approximately 35 agricultural extension programs reaching small-scale farming families world-wide.
This manual provides a guide for those who are helping future Peace Corps Volunteers to acquire basic beekeeping skills. The program is designed to help Trainees develop the skills they will need to work and live in another culture as beekeeping extensionists. This is a skills training program; thus, some further in-country training or orientation is presumed.
This manual is not intended to be a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to aquaculture training. Training is a dynamic process, constantly evolving, and always needs to be tailored to the unique circumstances of each program. This includes the needs of the trainees, the objectives of the aquaculture projects, and the personalities and styles of the training staff. The technical sessions described here are meant to serve as guidelines.
Corruption exists in all societies. Corruption is a violation of public trust for personal gain. It affects the everyday life of individuals at all levels of society, though they may not be aware of it because they have never known anything else. When many people participate in corruption, system integrity breaks down and some people resort to corruption to survive. Corruption is a development issue because it erodes the infrastructure, threatens economic competitiveness and public health and safety, and undermines accountability and trust.
This manual is built on the experience of women like these and the staff of local organizations that assist them. We are proud to make it available to those who are working at the "frontline" of small business development, trainers and programmers who work with Third World women and understand their needs, as well as their hopes.
Despite the alarming statistics, events such as droughts, earthquakes and floods do not have to become disasters with devastating impacts on lives, livelihoods, the economy, and the environment. Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation activities can reduce the destruction and minimize suffering in disaster-prone places, creating truly sustainable development at the same time.
This manual is intended to serve as a sourcebook for Volunteers and others to draw upon when implementing educational programs. The activities here are primarily organized according to subject matter, such as soil, water, trees, nature awareness, and ecology, with additional activities included under Service Learning Activities and Games.
For years, Peace Corps Volunteers have assisted communities to create and engage in a broad range of environmental education activities. Although the content and setting of each of these activities is different, the educational goal is the same: to help communities appreciate, protect, and sustain their natural surroundings.
This book is a resource for Peace Corps Volunteers, teachers, community leaders, mentors, learning coaches, and others who are interested in delivering “hands-on” educational activities in classrooms and communities.
