STATEMENT FROM PEACE CORPS DIRECTOR CAROL SPAHN ON THE RETURN OF PEACE CORPS TO THE REPUBLIC OF PALAU
(Washington, D.C. | Friday, February 2, 2024) – I am thrilled to announce that the Peace Corps will re-open its country program in the Republic of Palau in 2025. I am grateful to President Surangel Whipps, Jr. for his invitation to return to Palau, which highlights the enduring friendship between the United States and Palau and the importance of people-to-people ties and shared development priorities.
The Peace Corps has a long history of partnering with Palau and its people. From 1966 to 2018, the agency operated a one-post, two-country model in Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia, and during that time more than 4,400 Peace Corps Volunteers served these Pacific Island nations. Volunteers will live and work side-by-side with community partners to improve childhood literacy and math and science skills, along with teaching English as a foreign language.
This is an exciting time for the Peace Corps as the agency and its Volunteers work in partnership with host country governments to promote a more interconnected world in service to peace and world friendship.
