Xavier University of Louisiana, a Historically Black University, whose core mission is to promote a more just and humane society.  Our graduate programs focus in the discipline areas of education, leadership, and counseling. Scholarship, teaching, and service are integral to students’ educational experiences, which extends beyond the classroom and into the community. The goals of the DOEC Graduate Programs is to educate men and women, advancing the quality of human life through scholarship, teaching, and service.

The Master of Arts Teaching program is designed for individuals who do not have prior teaching experience. This is the perfect program for students interested in earning their teaching licensure in the following areas: elementary, middle, secondary, or special education. Our dedicated faculty offer new teachers an exceptional amount of personal contact, coaching, support and supervision through this rigorous academic program. Each candidate is offered a unique experience rich in quality, dynamic in pedagogical practice. Throughout the course of study, candidates are encouraged to explore and reflect on previous experiences and bridge new understandings from course offerings into future practice.

Application requirements

Master's Programs: Students who are applying to the University's Master's programs must submit the following to be considered for admission to Xavier:

• A Graduate Application;
• Official transcript(s) of all undergraduate and, where applicable, of all post-baccalaureate course work;
• All official college/university transcripts, including undergraduate and graduate work;
• A degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
• Scores from the Graduate Record Exam Revised (GRE) with a minimum score for the Revised GRE of 280 or submission of scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) with a minimum score of 380; and
• Two letters of professional confidential references from former to current supervisor or instructor

In addition to the above requirements, Master's applicants in Education and Counseling must also submit a one-page written essay on why the applicant has chosen the proposed program of graduate study.  This essay also serves as a writing sample.

Special Requirements for Master of Arts in Teaching Applicants:

In addition to the above requirements, MAT applicants must submit:

• Praxis I scores (an ACT composite score of 22 or a SAT combined verbal and math score of 1030 or a Master's degree or higher) may be used in lieu of Praxis I; and the
• Praxis II (content exam).

Must Pass Praxis I (Core Academic Skills for Educators) Exempted from Praxis I: advance degree, ACT composite score of 22, or SAT combined verbal/math score of 1030. Must pass Praxis II (content & pedagogy)

Cost savings details

Our Master of Arts in Teaching program gives an automatic 25% tuition discount. There is no in-state or out-of-state fees.

Internship

Fellows will be required to complete a one-year teacher residency program. 

Other opportunities

Xavier University of Louisiana can provide a stipend of $17,500 for one year if the Fellow decides to become certified in either mathematics or science.
