About this program

Fordham's MA Program in International Political Economy and Development is a three semester (12 course) program designed to train students for international professional careers. The curriculum offers you an advanced interdisciplinary study of global economic relations and international development issues built on a rigorous foundation in economic, political and quantitative analysis. We offer four specializations. You may wish to specialize in international development studies if you seek a career as a project manager with an international relief and development organization. A specialization in international and development economics may be ideal for someone seeking a public sector career as a government economist or analyst. If your interest is in pursuing a career as a financial analyst in the private sector then you may wish to specialize in international banking and finance. We also offer a specialization in global environmental and resource economics for students interested in sustainability issues.

Internship

Fordham's Coverdell Fellows will gain valuable on-the-job training in project management while interning with a community development organization in an underserved US community. You may be selected to intern as an assistant project manager with the University Neighborhood Housing Program (UNHP). UNHP is a community organization dedicated to the creation, preservation, and financing of affordable housing in the Bronx for immigrant and other low-income families. Our fellows may also be selected to intern as an assistant project manager with the Fordham Road Business Improvement District (Fordham BID) or the Belmont Business Improvement District (Belmont BID). These two BIDs promote local business development by improving the quality of life in several immigrant and low-income communities in the Bronx. Finally, you may be selected to intern as an assistant project manager with Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation (FBHC). Tenant and community leaders formed FBHC in 1980 to prevent housing abandonment in many parts of the Bronx. Today, FBHC oversees the management of more than 110 apartment buildings with nearly 3500 units. FBHC is a community leader in providing housing that is safe, sound, and affordable.

Other opportunities

On a competitive basis, Fellows specializing in International Banking and Finance may have their tuition waiver extended to cover the tuition expense of earning a second MA in economics.

Jobs for alumni

Based on the latest annual survey of our alumni, roughly 39% are employed in the private sector, frequently as analysts and economists with firms such as Credit Suisse, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Ernst & Young, Thomson Reuters, and Standard and Poor's. About 23% are employed in the non-profit sector, usually working overseas as project managers for agencies such as Lutheran World Relief, Catholic Relief Services and Save the Children. Another 25% are employed in the government, frequently as managers, analysts and economists with multilateral organizations such as UNICEF, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the UN Development Programme as well as with US governmental organizations such as the US Agency for International Development, US Foreign Agricultural Service, the US International Trade Administration, and the US Congress. Finally, 12% are in academia and education, some of whom are pursuing the JD in law or the PhD in one of the social sciences.
