About this program

Applied Psychology- with a deep commitment to a mission of Social Justice, Antioch’s Counseling and Therapy programs explore environmental and systemic factors that affect mental health and well-being. Our highly experiential programs are taught by leading scholar practitioners, who foster professional and personal growth and inspire your development of a personal philosophy of psychological, social, and cultural change.

People are complex beings embedded within complicated systems of relationships. In order to understand the complexity of both intrapersonal and interpersonal processes, students examine the relationships that exist between clients and their partners, coworkers, friends, and families to learn about their emotional health, physical health, social life, and community involvement. At Antioch University New England, you study systemic, feminist, and postmodern theories, in addition to traditional counseling theories. Our students are trained to systematically work with individuals and couples and families of all configurations.

At Antioch University, we leverage experiential learning, internships, research studies, outreach projects and other student participation opportunities to enhance the education experience beyond the classroom. Our counseling and therapy programs intertwine rigorous academic coursework and experiential learning opportunities, giving you the comprehensive training needed to launch your career and to start creating lasting change in the world.

Clinical Psychology- Antioch University New England’s practitioner-scholar program prepares reflective clinicians who undertake multiple roles in their professional careers. Accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), AUNE’s Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) offers rigorous academic challenge and thorough clinical training. The program prepares graduates for not only therapy and assessment, but also supervision, management, applied research, administration, consultation, and public policy. Our academic community emphasizes a social vision of clinical psychology committed to diversity and social justice, and responsive to the needs of the region and larger society.

The Department of Clinical Psychology operates three unique centers that benefit our students:

• The Psychological Services Center (PSC) is a psychological clinic staffed by doctoral students. With faculty supervision, students offer individual, couple, family, and group counseling, testing and assessment, and other services to area residents.
• The Multicultural Center for Research and Practice focuses on issues of minority or marginalized individuals and groups in the context of social justice and multiculturalism. The Center provides consultation, outreach, and research – within and beyond the US.
• The Center for Behavioral Health Innovation (BHI) is a research and evaluation group, working shoulder to shoulder with community partners to improve behavioral health practice and outcomes for underserved populations.

Applied Psychology- Scholarship equal to 25% of tuition (only) for the first 2 years of the student’s program.  Please be aware that the financial package specified reflects an average of specific degree programs in the Applied Psychology Department for 16-17 academic year.  Specific program costs and Fellowship values will vary by program.  Interested individuals should inquire to get exact information for specific programs.

Clinical Psychology- Scholarship equal to 25% of tuition (only) for the first 2 years of the student’s program.  The cost of the program is $147,762, with a financial fellowship value of $17,278, which leaves the program to a total cost of $130, 484.  Please be aware that the financial package specified reflects full time enrollment.  All rates are for 16-17 academic year.  Attending full time would be advisable for students seeking the highest financial reward.

Applied Psychology- All students participate in an internship in a professional setting. This experience will enable you to validate and clarify the theory you acquire in your courses as you develop your own role as a clinician. Examples of internship sites include the following:

Clinical Psychology- Students in the program complete a year-long internship in an organized health care setting. It is overseen by the director of internships. It is an integral component of the Doctoral Program and the final experience in the clinical training sequence. During the internship, the student is expected to assume significant responsibilities and to perform major professional functions under the supervision of qualified psychologists. As the culminating clinical training experience, the internship is expected to provide the student with a variety of appropriate role models, as well as intensive and diverse supervised opportunities to function in the various roles performed by a clinical psychologist.

Katie, a graduate of AUNE’s Marriage and Family Therapy program, spent a year in Rwanda interning with the International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency helping victims of slavery, sexual exploitation, and other violence. Katie worked with Baraka Uwingeneye, client care director at IJM Rwanda, on a team counseling parents whose daughters some of them as young as two years old had been raped. Last November, IJM started its first counseling group of eleven clients, led by Katie and two contract counselors. Katie said that both the Rwandan government and citizens are striving for reconciliation, and the many government-led and citizen-led organizations assisting survivors and conventions to promote unity among the young generation are fostering the country’s reconstruction.

Sebern Fisher, a graduate of AUNE’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, recently published a book entitled Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma.  From the author's webpage:  "In this cutting-edge book, experienced clinician Sebern Fisher, keenly demonstrates neurofeedback’s profound ability to help treat one of the most intractable mental health concerns of our time: severe childhood abuse, neglect, or abandonment, otherwise known as developmental trauma."
