Multi-Sport Court Development Project

Outdoor site for sports court
Project by Hunter K., Volunteer from California
Rwanda Education

Description

The goal of this project is to strengthen a local primary school’s learning environment by creating a multifunctional playground and sports court. A key objective is to strengthen community skills through active involvement in planning, construction, and long‑term care of the new space. Community leaders, teachers, parents, and school staff have all taken part in identifying the need and shaping the project, ensuring that it reflects a community‑determined priority.

The project will create a safe and durable area where students can play basketball, handball, football, volleyball, and enjoy unstructured play. Teachers will use the space for physical education and active learning, and they will guide school teams and organized activities that support communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. The court will help address the current lack of a designated play area, which has limited opportunities for student development, attendance, and motivation.

The space will also serve as a shared gathering place for community events and celebrations, strengthening social connections and providing fair access to play for all students, including young children and individuals with disabilities who are currently limited by uneven ground. By combining educational benefits, community participation, and sustainable local stewardship, the project is expected to improve student well‑being, increase school attendance, and offer lasting recreational and academic benefits for future generations.
