Women's Shade Structure and Chicken Coop
Description
This women’s group is creating a shade structure and a chicken coop on a three‑hectare garden where about forty women work. With no existing shade, work productivity is limited by heat and sun exposure. The new central structure will offer a safe place to rest and serve as a venue for trainings, seminars, and meetings. The project also includes a coop able to house up to four hundred chickens.
Income from the coop will be shared among members and reinvested into maintaining the coop and supporting additional garden initiatives. The coop will also provide manure to strengthen the soil, leading to improved yields. Selling chickens at a reduced price will increase food availability for the surrounding community.
The community is contributing the land, a substantial financial contribution for materials and labor, and discounted labor to lower costs. The grant will support these efforts and will be paired with an out‑planting initiative and trainings to strengthen the number of shade and fruit trees in the garden. Expected results include better health and safety for members, higher agricultural output, greater food availability, and a sustainable revenue stream that supports the long‑term success of the garden and the women’s group.
