Solar-Irrigated Sustainable Garden

Project by Matthew W., Volunteer from Minnesota

Description

This grant will provide the equipment needed to establish and maintain a solar‑irrigated garden at an elementary school. Teachers will guide students in year‑round cultivation, supported by structured and informal sessions led by experienced community growers who will strengthen practical skills in vegetable production and updated agricultural methods. The school serves an urban population with limited access to hands‑on food production, making this space an important learning opportunity.

Through this program, students will plant and harvest fruits and vegetables from seed while practicing responsible environmental stewardship. They will gain long‑term knowledge they can use to supplement their diets and explore future careers in sustainable agriculture. Surplus produce will be sold locally, and the proceeds will support improvements to classrooms while providing students with basic business experience.

The school has already selected a partially enclosed site and gathered more than twenty students to participate in soil preparation alongside community members. However, funding for the well, solar pump, panels, and irrigation system remains out of reach. This grant will supply these essential components, enabling the school to create a productive garden where students can learn, grow, and share agricultural skills while improving their access to fresh fruits and vegetables and supporting educational needs.
