Women's Chicken Coop Project

Project by Nicholas G., Volunteer from Pennsylvania
Senegal Agriculture

Description

The community is working to establish its first chicken coop to improve access to poultry and open new economic opportunities for local families. Because chickens must currently be purchased from distant areas at high prices, many households struggle to afford them. This project will create a dependable local source of poultry while strengthening practical skills and income‑generating activities within the community.

Grant funds will support the construction of the coop and the purchase of chicks, feed, watering and feeding equipment, and essential supplies. Community members are providing land, labor, and day‑to‑day management, reflecting strong ownership and long‑term commitment. In addition to supplying food, the effort will strengthen skills in poultry care, bookkeeping, business management, and compost production using manure to enrich local gardens and farms. These skills will stay within the community and can be shared with others who wish to begin their own poultry efforts.

The project is designed for long‑term independence. Poultry will be sold locally, and earnings will be reinvested into new chicks, feed, and maintenance to ensure continued operation. Your support will help the community create a steady local food source, strengthen small‑scale agriculture, and expand opportunities that will benefit families for years to come.
