Citrus and Papaya Orchard

workers in farm field
Project by Griffin W., Volunteer from California
Senegal Agriculture

Description

The community is establishing a papaya and lemon orchard to increase food security, income, and a broader range of nutritious options. Although the community operates a cooperative farm, it currently focuses only on annual vegetable production. The long‑held goal of adding perennial fruit trees is now within reach, creating an opportunity to expand what the community can grow.

With your support, the project will strengthen local knowledge of large‑scale irrigation and create opportunities for sustained tree production. Funds will be used to purchase all irrigation materials and tree seedlings. The community will provide labor and trainings related to construction, maintenance of irrigation systems, and water resource management. The cooperative has agreed to maintain all materials and replace any malfunctioning parts in future years using its own treasury.

This work enhances the capability of all community members by enabling greater output on less land, increasing stable income, and laying groundwork for broader growth.

Community contributions $1,830.00
