Aquaculture in the Mangroves
Description
The goal of this project is to strengthen community skills and economic opportunities by providing training and materials for sustainable beekeeping and oyster harvesting near local mangrove areas. A primary objective is to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to install, maintain, and safely use these systems while protecting the environment that supports them.
Community members identified the need for additional sustainable income sources and will take an active role throughout the project. Participants will receive hands-on instruction from local experts, coordinated by the Peace Corps Volunteer, on essential technical skills. For beekeeping, this includes hive construction, understanding the life cycle of the hive, monitoring and care, tool and uniform use, safety practices, harvesting methods, and basic processing and market analysis. For oyster harvesting, participants will learn key elements of freshwater aquaculture, the biological process of oyster growth, and how to assess potential markets for their products.
By gaining these skills and resources, the participating groups will be better positioned to support household income through sustainable activities. The project is expected to strengthen community involvement with their surrounding ecosystem, increase awareness of how to protect it, and provide a model that others can follow. In the long term, these efforts aim to expand local knowledge, encourage responsible use of natural resources, and create lasting opportunities for economic growth.
