Compost and Gardening Skills
Description
This project aims to train community members in composting and land preparation to strengthen vegetable farming skills. With no livestock available, farmers depend on crops that do not require fertilizer, resulting in limited vegetable consumption and uncertainty about how to grow vegetables successfully. The plan includes two two‑day workshops for ten farmers, offering both instruction and hands‑on practice in creating and maintaining compost.
Participants will receive manure to begin their compost piles and will learn how to keep the piles viable over time. Once the initial compost matures, it can serve as a long‑term substitute for manure when starting new piles, making the process self‑sustaining. The workshops will also provide clear guidance on land preparation so that each participant leaves with practical knowledge to support vegetable farming.
Farmers who apply what they learn can produce vegetables for many years and act as examples for others in the community. Over time, this effort is expected to improve access to healthier food options and create opportunities to earn income through the sale of vegetables and compost.
