Health & Life Skills Camp

Project by Emilia C., Volunteer from California
Madagascar Women and Girls in Development

Description

Many adolescent girls in rural areas have limited access to health education, mentorship, and safe activities outside the classroom, particularly during school breaks. Community members and educators have noted a growing need for programs that help girls strengthen confidence, leadership abilities, and understanding of their health and future possibilities.

This project will support a five‑day leadership and health camp for at least 30 girls ages 10–16 from two neighboring communities. Through interactive lessons, sports, games, and mentorship, participants will learn about reproductive health, malaria prevention, healthy relationships, goal setting, and self‑advocacy in a safe and supportive setting. Local partners, educators, and volunteers are planning and implementing the camp and will serve as counselors and mentors. The project will also train volunteers in youth mentorship and facilitation so they can continue offering similar activities after the camp concludes.

Funding will cover food, transportation, educational materials, activity supplies, and trained facilitators, ensuring participation is accessible regardless of financial barriers. Building on existing girls’ groups active in both communities, the project aims to create lasting benefits beyond the one‑week camp. By supporting adolescent girls and strengthening the skills of local mentors, the effort helps ensure ongoing support for girls’ health, education, and leadership well after the grant period ends.
