Improve a School Canteen

Project by Zachary V., Volunteer from Georgia
Ghana Education

Description

This project seeks to upgrade an existing school canteen in Ghana by improving the structure, adding tile, and equipping it with basic food preparation facilities. These improvements aim to strengthen feeding efforts, enhance hygiene, and encourage stronger community participation. The school and community identified this priority as essential for creating a safe, healthy environment that supports both meal preparation and learning. Current conditions expose children to health risks because food is prepared in makeshift spaces lacking basic hygiene standards.

Expected outcomes include a cleaner and safer canteen, improved conditions for teaching and learning, and trained staff who understand hygiene and proper food handling. The project also aims to increase community ownership of school infrastructure and strengthen the ability to maintain the facility. Community members will contribute labor, local materials, and oversight, while parents, teachers, and local leaders will support monitoring, procurement, logistics, and community workdays.

A project committee made up of school representatives, parent association members, and community leaders will oversee implementation, ensure transparency, and coordinate maintenance planning. By addressing priorities identified through consultation with families and staff, this project provides a sustainable investment in children’s education while strengthening local ability to manage and maintain school facilities.
