Household Latrines
Description
This grant supports the construction of twenty household latrines to address the current shortage that has led to open defecation and related hygiene risks. The planned units are Bio‑Digesting Toilets, which offer greater sanitation, easier maintenance, and a longer lifespan than traditional pit systems. After reviewing options, the community selected this design as the most suitable, reflecting long‑standing interest in completing such a project.
The community’s objective is to reduce open defecation and increase access to safe sanitation, with particular benefit for elderly residents who face challenges traveling long distances to existing facilities. Strengthening will occur through required training sessions for all households receiving latrines, covering the risks of open defecation, the advantages of household systems, and proper maintenance. A community committee has been formed to oversee the work and promote long‑term sustainability.
Each participating household will contribute twenty‑five percent of total costs as a demonstration of commitment. Additional funding is needed to help households finish construction and move the community closer to its goal of safer sanitation practices and reduced open defecation.
