Science In Silence
Description
This project seeks to establish a functional and accessible science laboratory at a school in Ghana that serves deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students from Kindergarten through Basic 9. Although the school has a designated laboratory space, it lacks the equipment and materials needed for practical lessons, resulting in instruction that relies heavily on theory. The project will provide essential apparatus, safety tools, furniture, storage materials, and renovations to create a safe and effective learning environment aligned with the national curriculum.
By introducing hands‑on science instruction, students will gain visual and experiential learning opportunities that are especially important for deaf learners. The project aims to improve engagement, strengthen understanding of scientific ideas, and enhance performance in school and national examinations. Students will also strengthen skills in critical thinking, observation, and problem‑solving while building confidence in subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
In addition to supporting students, the project will strengthen teacher skills through training on safe use, storage, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, along with strategies for conducting effective experiments. Long‑term sustainability will be supported through designated laboratory coordinators, inventory systems, proper storage procedures, and a dedicated school budget for replacement materials, ensuring continued impact for future students and staff.
