Assembly Hall Renovation

Project by Maxwell W., Volunteer from Arizona
Sierra Leone Education

Description

This grant will support the renovation of an assembly hall in a semi‑rural community of 8,000 residents, including thousands of school‑attending children. The hall already has walls, window and door openings, a stage, and a strong roof. Renovation efforts will focus on supplying cement, windows, doors, and paint to strengthen structural components and ensure long‑term stability and security. Once improved, the hall will serve as a central gathering point and expand the community’s ability to host national exams, which currently requires relying on facilities in the district capital.

Beyond exam administration, the hall will support daily morning assemblies, Learning and Debating Society events, communal activities, and religious ceremonies. Local stakeholders have identified the project as their highest priority through community consultations and participatory assessments. Residents have committed to meeting their 25 percent contribution by providing sand, stone, labor, and food for workers. Skilled tradespeople and trustworthy material suppliers have already been identified to ensure a reliable renovation process.

Upon completion, the renovated hall will strengthen local education by enabling exam administration within the community, eliminating the need for students and families to travel. It will also enhance the community’s ability to discuss and address social and economic concerns in a safe and organized space. Long‑term upkeep is expected to remain minimal, limited mainly to replacing cement patches or glass panes. To ensure sustainability, a maintenance committee will be established to oversee weekly cleanings, manage event fees, and coordinate quarterly repairs.
