Maternity Ward Completion
Description
The primary goal of this grant is to finish construction of an unfinished wing at the local clinic for overnight observation. Completing this space will help reduce maternal and infant mortality, strengthen the community’s ability to care for conditions requiring longer monitoring, and support good health practices. Local leaders and community health nurses will oversee the project’s completion. Construction has already begun using limited community resources, and once finished, these same leaders and nurses will assume full administrative responsibility.
With this new space, the community will strengthen its ability to administer healthcare, educate youth on health practices, and care for at‑risk residents. Community members will also gain a stronger role in their own care by having a reliable and accessible facility instead of traveling elsewhere for treatment. Support from the Peace Corps is essential because the community does not currently have the means to secure the remaining funds needed for construction. After completion, they will be able to maintain the facility using established methods.
Long-term sustainability will be ensured by training all community health nurses in the appropriate use of the facility and preparing them to teach others. Leadership and maintenance responsibilities will be fully transferred to local administrators.
