Garden Pump Replacement
Description
This project seeks to economically empower more than 250 women and strengthen household food security by replacing the main water pump and repairing the reservoirs. At present, a small temporary tank supplements a malfunctioning large tank, causing water shortages that limit gardening work, reduce yields, and increase labor demands. Replacing the pump and repairing the reservoirs is expected to increase water availability by roughly 1,900%, enabling women to extend the gardening season, improve production, and reduce losses after harvest. This increase in output could generate an additional seasonal income for all women working in the garden.
The project is guided by the established Garden Committee, which manages financial contributions, duty rosters, and overall garden operations. At least 20 community members, including youth, will gain practical experience in pump and reservoir maintenance, water management, and efficient irrigation—skills that can be applied to other household or community infrastructure efforts. Women gardeners will also strengthen their leadership and financial management abilities through oversight of the community bank account and participation in project decisions.
Funds are needed to acquire durable pump components, reservoir repair materials, and training resources, while the community will contribute labor and raise funds for continued maintenance. Once completed, the Garden Committee will take full responsibility for upkeep of the water system, supported by trained community members. Five years from now, the system is expected to remain fully functional, with both technical and organizational skills retained locally, ensuring reliable water access, increased vegetable production, and sustained economic gains for women and their households.
