Community Market

Project by Aji Mary J., Volunteer from Georgia
The Gambia Business Development Health and HIV/AIDS

Description

The goal of this project is to complete the construction of a community market that improves access to nutritious food and strengthens local economic opportunities. This initiative responds to a community-identified priority to address limited access to fresh, locally grown food and create income-generating opportunities for residents.

To achieve this, the project will establish at least 24 vendor spaces where local producers can sell goods, increase household income, and stimulate the local economy. Community members have been actively involved from the start, contributing labor and materials and forming a committee to manage operations, collect vendor contributions, and oversee maintenance. Training in entrepreneurship and financial literacy has already been provided, with refresher sessions planned to ensure vendors have the skills needed for long-term success. Additional activities include promoting waste reduction and organizing community clean-up days to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

Expected outcomes include improved access to nutritious foods, reduced health risks such as anemia, and stronger economic stability through small-scale entrepreneurship. With strong local ownership and a clear plan for sustainability, the market will serve as a lasting solution to economic and nutritional challenges in the community.
