School Dairy Cow Project

Project by Joseph S., Volunteer from New Jersey
Tanzania Education Health and HIV/AIDS

Description

This project aims to improve student nutrition by establishing a cooperative dairy initiative at the secondary school. Many students lack regular access to nutritious animal products, so the school plans to provide milk each week while also offering practical instruction in animal husbandry. Students selected for this effort have shown clear interest and will participate as part of their daily chores by feeding the cows, grazing them, and maintaining their housing.

Grant funds will first support renovation of existing animal structures on school grounds, replacing old sheds with upgraded facilities suitable for dairy cows. After this work is completed, students will receive training in cow care and learn about nutrition to strengthen their skills and readiness for long-term management of the project.

Remaining resources will be used to purchase two pregnant dairy cows to ensure immediate milk production and cover initial needs such as feed and medical treatment. With these cows, more than five hundred enrolled students will be able to receive small weekly portions of milk. As the herd grows in future years, the school will be able to increase portions and expand access to healthy, nutritious meals for a growing number of students.
