Solar-Powered Learning

Project by Maxwell P., Volunteer from Arizona
Kenya Education

Description

A rural Kenyan community once raised funds and worked with a local development fund to open a new school to uplift its students. After celebrating its first graduating class last year, the community now seeks to strengthen the school’s quality of education by installing solar electricity to power classroom and security lighting, along with a computer and printer. With grid electricity unreliable during the rainy season, solar energy offers a more dependable option for a community already familiar with small-scale systems.

Consistent lighting will help teachers and students use their time at school more effectively. Access to technology on campus will also reduce costs that the school currently incurs by renting time with a computer and printer. These improvements will strengthen the school’s ability to support current students while attracting new ones, ultimately helping it secure additional government funding for future needs.

Project resources will be used to wire the school with sockets and lighting, install solar panels and batteries, purchase a computer and printer, and enhance security. All work will be carried out by local companies, electricians, and contractors. Once installation is complete, the community will be better positioned to focus its efforts on further empowering its students.
