Water Taps and Pipes Extension

village
Village that will gain improved water access
Project by Colin S., Volunteer from New Jersey
Zambia Drinking Water and Sanitation

Description

This project will bring water closer to people's homes by extending the supply from an existing borehole. Last fall, the community constructed a tower, a tank, and installed a pump to draw water to the surface, creating one new tap for local use. With the upcoming grant, residents will extend clean water through new taps and pipes placed much nearer to households.

At present, people walk between 100 and 500 meters to collect water. When this extension is completed, they will walk only 10 to 50 meters. Having water closer to home is expected to strengthen sanitation, hygiene, health, and overall wellness. The grant will be used to acquire materials such as taps and pipes, while all labor will be provided by community members.

Residents will dig trenches and install twenty‑two new taps as part of their contribution. Multiple community members requested the project at various times, emphasizing that easy access to water remains one of the highest priority needs they face.
