Establishing a Library

Project by Zoey L., Volunteer from Illinois
Jamaica Education

Description

This project aims to improve literacy outcomes among primary school students by addressing a major barrier: limited access to age‑appropriate books. Many students currently lack reading materials and a dedicated space to practice, contributing to low literacy levels and reduced academic confidence. To meet this community‑identified priority, an unused classroom will be transformed into a functional and welcoming library that is safe, accessible, and conducive to learning.

Over one hundred age‑ and level‑appropriate books will be provided, giving approximately one hundred thirty students consistent access to reading materials for the first time. In addition, structured literacy support will be offered for students performing below grade level. These learners will participate in regular small‑group reading sessions designed to strengthen foundational skills and build confidence, with at least fifty struggling readers expected to improve by one grade level within the project period.

The project will also promote long‑term impact by training teachers to incorporate the library into everyday instruction and empowering students to take active roles in managing the space. These combined efforts are intended to establish a sustainable reading culture. By increasing access to books, improving reading skills, and creating a supportive learning environment, the project will foster lasting educational growth and expand opportunities for student success.
