Water Source Protection and Responsible Waste Management

Project by Nathan K., Volunteer from Ohio
Peru Drinking Water and Sanitation

Description

This project aims to improve the quality of water used for human consumption while also strengthening public solid waste management practices. Water sources near densely populated areas are frequently affected by pollutants that harm the environment and contaminate supplies. The most common issues involve solid waste and plastics, such as bottles and wrappers, that are improperly discarded. Enhancing water quality at its source can help reduce treatment costs, prevent waterborne illnesses, and safeguard local ecosystems.

The project will remove existing contamination from rivers and streams through organized clean‑up activities. To prevent further pollution, it will also promote public awareness of proper solid waste management. Training sessions and education activities will be provided for the general population and educational institutions to encourage responsible disposal practices and increase understanding of the importance of protecting local water sources.

In addition, the project will offer communities the resources they currently lack to manage waste effectively. Recycling points will be installed in public spaces and educational institutions, giving residents accessible options for proper disposal and separation of solid materials. Through these combined efforts, the initiative seeks to reduce environmental contamination and motivate communities to take an active role in preserving their water sources.
