Community Garden Project
Description
This community garden project will create shared green spaces where residents can grow fresh produce, learn about agriculture and nutrition, strengthen social connections, and develop healthy habits that support mental well-being. The project will serve three institutions in the province: the local Red Cross branch, a municipal orphanage, and a municipal senior center. The Red Cross branch is supported by hundreds of volunteers who provide services throughout the community, while the orphanage provides residential care for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or parental loss, and the senior center supports dozens of senior citizens through recreational activities and home visits.
All three institutions have expressed interest in establishing community gardens to improve food security, reduce nutritional costs, and increase community participation. The gardens will improve access to fresh produce while fostering responsibility, teamwork, and practical life skills. At the orphanage and senior center, participants and staff will work together to cultivate and maintain the gardens. Children will develop responsibility and practical skills, while senior citizens will benefit from social interaction, physical activity, and meaningful engagement.
At the local Red Cross branch, the garden beds will provide a space for volunteers and community members to participate in therapeutic gardening activities and share harvested produce with their families. Each institution will receive gardening tools, seeds, and outdoor furniture. Weekly educational visits and nutrition-focused recipe books developed by the Peace Corps Volunteer will strengthen the long-term sustainability of the project.
