Educational Mural

Project by Canaan M., Volunteer from South Carolina
Dominican Republic Youth

Description

This project will create an environmental mural designed to promote community pride, youth engagement, and awareness of local natural resources. The area is widely known for ecotourism activities such as whale watching, along with beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and protected areas. Because the local economy relies heavily on its natural surroundings, it is important for young people to understand the value of conservation and responsible community stewardship. The mural will serve as a lasting reminder of these principles.

Planned activities include educational talks, a community trash cleanup, and a collaborative mural‑painting event involving students, school staff, community members, local artists, and Peace Corps Volunteers. These efforts will strengthen youth skills in teamwork, communication, artistic expression, and environmental stewardship while also strengthening community participation and leadership.

National education authorities recognize environmental education as a priority, emphasizing its role in helping young people become responsible caretakers of natural resources. Research indicates that environmental murals can strengthen positive attitudes toward conservation and encourage community support. Through this project, a school of 250 students will deepen its understanding of environmental protection while contributing to a meaningful, community‑driven effort with lasting impact.
