Smart Hydroponics for Youth

Project by Rebecca H., Volunteer from New Mexico
Indonesia Education

Description

The Smart Internet of Things–Based Hydroponics program aims to support young Indonesians with disabilities by expanding access to technical, employment‑focused learning. By providing foundational skills in sustainable agriculture and digital technology, the initiative strengthens pathways to skill‑based job markets and supports young adults with disabilities in becoming more independent. Running from June 2026 to September 2026, the project includes three phases: procurement and installation, training, and growing.

Five classes will cultivate lettuce, bok choy, water spinach, spinach, and mustard greens over 1.5 to 2 months. To ensure an effective and lasting effort, 25 students and five teachers will participate in Smart Internet of Things–based hydroponics training led by CV AJ Farm. After completing the first cycle and the associated monitoring and evaluation, the project will continue independently as a long‑term community investment that engages students and equips them with technical career skills.

By connecting sustainable agriculture with accessible digital tools, the program responds to a community‑identified priority for practical vocational education and offers a scalable model for future‑oriented learning. In alignment with established development lenses, it builds on existing community interest in hydroponic systems as a platform for growth, strengthening local knowledge and collaborative relationships to support meaningful participation in ongoing development efforts.
