School Greenhouse Initiative

Project by Allison J., Volunteer from Massachusetts
Indonesia Agriculture Education

Description

This project will establish a school greenhouse to enhance practical education, environmental awareness, and student skill development. It emerged as a priority through discussions with teachers, students, and community members who sought more hands-on learning connected to science, agriculture, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The greenhouse will function as a living laboratory where students gain direct experience in hydroponics, plant cultivation, composting, and greenhouse management.

Teachers will integrate greenhouse activities into subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Economics, and language learning through experiments, data collection, and project-based lessons. Students will further strengthen leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving by engaging in planting, maintenance, harvesting, and operational tasks. Produce grown in the greenhouse may be used for school consumption or small-scale student entrepreneurship efforts that reinforce continued learning.

The project has strong school ownership through an established management structure involving school leadership, teachers, and students. After the grant period, the greenhouse will remain active through science classes and an extracurricular club focused on environmental learning, supported by the wider community. By combining education, sustainability, food production, and life skills development, this project will provide long-term benefits for students and serve as a model for future school-based environmental initiatives.
