Street Safety Initiative
Description
Motorcycle accidents are a major cause of death in Thailand, with motorcycles responsible for most road‑traffic fatalities. In one recent year, more than fourteen thousand people died in motorcycle‑related incidents, many of whom were not wearing helmets, including children and youth. In many rural communities, most children ride motorcycles daily without helmets because they do not own one, do not recognize the risks, or lack consistent safety education. This project seeks to address these barriers through a community‑led, sustainable helmet safety effort.
The initiative will begin with a two‑day Helmet Safety Camp where children will receive certified helmets, take part in engaging road‑safety sessions, and learn about the importance of helmet use through interactive activities. A dedicated grief and emotional‑support component will offer space and guidance for children who have experienced the loss of family members due to vehicle accidents. These elements aim to strengthen understanding, support emotional well‑being, and promote long‑term behavior change.
To ensure ongoing impact, the project will establish a Helmet Library managed in partnership with local government, allowing children to borrow or replace helmets as they grow. Helmet storage systems at participating schools will encourage regular use and proper care. By improving access, strengthening safety knowledge, providing emotional support, and creating sustainable systems, this initiative aims to protect children’s lives and foster a lasting culture of road safety.
